Some hobbies are so fun that they seem to practically take over. Follow these simple tips to stay in control and on track.

Hobbies are designed to help alleviate boredom and keep people busy and focused on a fun and creative activity. Hobbies can also help people connect and forge lasting friendships. As an added bonus many hobbies also offer health benefits that can dramatically change a person's life for the better.

And occasionally a hobby will come along that is so captivating that it seems to absorb the hobbyist almost completely.

Setting Goals for Hobbies

Have a hobby that feels like it's getting out of control? The first thing that needs to be done is to set a few boundaries with it. Setting a budget is one way to keep things in check, but bear in mind that some hobbies are more expensive than others and may require setting goals that are in balance with the overall entertainment budget of the household.

Set a limit on the number of hours per week that are devoted to a hobby. No more burning the midnight oil night after night in order to complete a project. Try limiting it to an hour or two each day, or just one or two nights a week. Not enough time during the week? Work on the hobby on Saturday or Sunday, but never both. Take a break and relax or work on other projects that don't involve the hobby.

Many hobbies have a way of taking over the house, like model railroading. These hobbies require large layouts that seem to take on a life of their own, slowly expanding and infiltrating into other areas of the home. Designate one room or area for the hobby and all of its supplies. When shopping for hobby supplies, avoid buying more material than storage space will allow.

How to Make Money With Hobbies

Share the joy. When finished with a hobby project, present it to a friend or family member as a gift instead of allowing it to collect dust while continuing to build more. Running out of friends to give finished products to? Consider selling them at craft shows or online through websites like Etsy or Ebay. Turning a hobby into a business that can support itself might be the fine line between obsession and career.

But the true key to a great hobby is the joy that it brings the hobbyist. A hobby should compliment the hobbyist in such a way that it isn't a struggle to complete a project. It a hobby is taking over, it might just be time to try a different one.
