It's frustraing when physical problems present challenges when trying to enjoy hobbies. But just learn to make adjustments or explore new hobbies, instead of giving up.

Most people look forward to when they have more free time to pursue hobbies. Unfortunately, physical problems such as deteriorating eyesight and arthritis present challenges for older people when they finally have more time to do the hobbies they love. For some retirees, the hobbies once found enjoyable are now difficult.

Knitting and Crochet Adjustments

Just because you can’t use standard-sized crochet hooks, as well as average-sized 8 knitting needles doesn’t mean you have to totally abandon your love for knitting and/or crochet. Just switch to larger hooks and needles. For example, instead of small knitting needles, choose sizes such as 17, 19, 35, and even 50. Also, use longer needles rather than the smaller, clumsier ones that can be more difficult to maneuver.

Crochet using larger hooks such as sizes P and Q. Or, check out aides such as the Comfort Crochet Cushion which helps you crochet with small hooks. And, crochet hook sets, such as Provo, have interchangeable hooks and additional grip positions, helping to reduce fatigue.

Cross Stitch Tips

Larger count fabric - Who says you have to stitch only on the standard 14-count Aida fabric? Go to your local needlework shop (LNS) and check out other sizes (such as 11 count fabric and larger.) You can always order online if you can’t find what you need at a store. Also, try stitching on monk’s cloth (which is seven-count fabric.) Just allow for more floss coverage the larger the square.

Magnifiers - There are a variety of magnifiers from which to choose. You, could get some drugstore glasses with the strongest lenses and use only for stitching. Magnetic magnifying rulers are also excellent for enlarging symbols on patterns.

Gardening

Look online (or visit garden centers) for gardening tools with larger non-slip cushioned handles, as well as special gardening aides for people with arthritis.

Explore New Hobbies

If your old hobby isn’t working out for you anymore, explore other pastimes that will work better with an aging body.

Music – Join a choir or choral group. Not only will you get to put your musical talent to work, but you can also fill a need for socialization. Many communities have choral groups just for seniors.

Drama – Look for community drama groups and join them. You just may have some latent acting talents. On the other hand, you can always work behind the scenes, helping with props.

Writing – Search online for web sites where you not only can horn your writing skills, but also compete in contests. If your eyes are failing, try tape recording your thoughts. When Gerry Correll became partially blind due to a stroke, he not only listened to books on tape, but also took a tape recorder and made an autobiography of his life, growing up in the depression.

Birding – Instead of just sitting on the front porch, wiling away the time, why not record singing birds? Many older people have found hours of pleasure learning to identify different birds. To attract birds, invest in a simple bird feeder. Just be sure your area isn’t known for bears as you don’t want to invite them, as well.

Volunteer

Finally, many elderly people have found great fulfillment in helping others as a hobby. Look for areas in your community where volunteers are needed. Chances are your local public schools would be more than happy to welcome you as a volunteer in a classroom where you could befriend children who need extra help. Remember that the greatest rewards come from giving of yourself.
